Review: Nocturne by Isol

September 5, 2012

Nocturne coverTitle: Nocturne: Dream Recipes
Author: Isol
Translator: Amado, Elisa
Length: 32 pages
Genre: Picture book
Publisher / Year: Groundwood Books / 2012
Source: From the publisher at Book Expo America.
Rating: 5/5
Why I Read It:It looked super neat.
Date Read: 07/07/12

This is a beautiful spiral bound book which stands upright. Before sleep, you choose a photo and let the light shine on it while you get ready for bed. When you are ready, you turn off the light and watch a whole different photo emerge, giving you a recipe for your dream for the night. It is a beautiful concept and a lot of fun to use. To see an example, check out this review by 123oleary.

The book was written and illustrated by Isol, an Argentinian artist. All of the ‘recipes’ are a lot of fun, and really quite clever. Definitely recommended for children, and for anyone who wants to have a bit of fun. A great gift book.

Intriguing! I must say that when I saw the page count was 32 pages, “Huh??” came immediately to mind. Now I see why.

I’m up for some experimentation. My dreams are interesting and puzzling so what can be wrong with really mixing things up?

This could give some extra craziness to those dreams for sure Howard :)

Oh, yes, this does look like great fun! I would love to see it and try it out in person to see what kinds of things it shows to me as I drift off. Very creative book!

It is so creative and fun zibilee. It may be aimed at children, but I think it’s fun for all!

This is a very neat idea. Though I am usually against books that are too derivative of other books, I think that one might want to collect an entire series of books like this as to have lots and lots if different choices on any given night.

Oh yes Brian!! The more dream ideas the better! Plus, some could be aimed at older audiences. heh

What a cool idea! Why can’t I think of stuff like this?

I know right softdrink?? Some people are unfairly given too many ideas ;) LOL

I’m torn: I want to click on the link to see the example, and I want to just discover them without preamble. Sounds just lovely. I can also imagine an Edward Gorey alternative volume, with more unsettling images that would come out after the lights were dimmed. Hee.

I just love how this pushes the boundaries of what a ‘book’ is commonly defined to be!

    Fascinating idea.

    This sounds really REALLY cool.

How fascinating. I can just see my kids ‘ohing’ and ‘ahing’ over it.
